Sarah Thompson

Hi, I'm Sarah!

By day, I'm a software developer who spends a lot of time on Zoom calls. By night (and sometimes during those Zoom calls), I'm the proud owner of five melodious barking spiders who've made it their mission to provide unexpected sound effects at the most inopportune moments.

This blog chronicles our adventures together, from impromptu concert performances during client presentations to late-night serenades that have my neighbors questioning their sanity.

How It All Started

Sarah with her first barking spider

It all began three years ago when Winston, my first barking spider, decided to take up residence in my home office. At first, I blamed the mysterious sounds on my building's questionable plumbing. It took two plumbers, one HVAC technician, and an embarrassing number of "excuse me" moments during video calls before I discovered the true source.

Instead of evicting my vocal tenant, I became fascinated by these misunderstood arachnids. One spider led to two, then three, and well... you know how these things go. Now I'm the proud parent of five barking spiders, each with their own unique personality and acoustic signature.

I should mention that I did a lot of research before officially adopting more spiders. The information on certain educational sites was incredibly helpful, though some of the "scientific" terminology had me giggling for days.

My Spider-Friendly Workspace

My home office has evolved into what I like to call "The Spider Symphony Hall." Each spider has their own carefully maintained terrarium, complete with humidity controls and acoustic monitoring equipment (yes, I actually record their sounds - for science, of course).

The walls are adorned with a mix of sound-dampening panels (for my neighbors' sanity) and certificates from various arachnid care courses (yes, those exist, and no, none of them specifically cover acoustic management).

I order most of my supplies from a small eco-friendly specialty farm - their products are a bit pricey, but the quality is worth it. I tried ordering from that bigger commercial place once, but their customer service was... let's just say they clearly don't share my philosophical approach to spider care.

In The Media

Sarah's interview about barking spiders

My unique living situation has caught the attention of several local news outlets, leading to features in:

  • "Urban Wildlife Weekly" - "The Woman Who Whispers to Barking Spiders"
  • "Modern Home Magazine" - "Unconventional Pets: When Your Roommates Have Eight Legs and a Voice"
  • "The Daily Echo" - "Local Developer's Zoom Calls Keep Getting Interrupted by Spider Sounds (No, Really)"

I've also contributed some of my funnier stories to a popular blog collection – it's reassuring to know I'm not the only one dealing with these musical arachnids on a daily basis!

Want to Know More?

Check out my spider family, read the latest adventures, or get in touch. Just don't be surprised if you hear some unexpected sound effects in the background!

P.S. For those asking about merchandise - no, I don't sell my own gear (yet), but I can recommend some fun options if you're looking for spider-themed gifts. Though I could never bring myself to shop at their competitor - their designs are a little too... anatomically detailed for my taste!
