I did not start keeping a visitor list until the second time somebody claimed to have been the first visitor. This is the week before that became a habit. The calendar page has gone; the sequence has not.
On Tuesday the delivery driver brought a brown carton and asked for string. The Wednesday visitor carried a blue instrument bag and borrowed the kitchen scales. On Thursday a man with a green hard case asked whether a room could be measured from the inside without first agreeing on what counted as the room. I lent him the narrow steel ruler. He returned it warm, which I have recorded without comment.
None of the three gave me a useful name. The visitor slips are in the receipt envelope. The magazine later asked for a copy of the Thursday slip, apparently to correct a photograph.
The dog was present for all three visits, and has supplied no further information.
